According to a recent report by Politico, EU Sports Commissioner Glenn Micallef has announced a boycott of the upcoming Winter Paralympics opening ceremony. This decision follows a move by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) to fully reinstate ten athletes from Russia and Belarus, allowing them to compete under their national flags and symbols for the first time since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

While the IPC is currently treating these competitors like those of any other nation, Commissioner Micallef labeled the presence of these national symbols as “unacceptable” given the ongoing war of aggression. He has called upon other European leaders to join his protest, a sentiment echoed by Ukrainian officials who described the IPC’s decision as a disappointing shift from previous “neutral status” requirements.

Our Take

There is no question that politicians may (and in many cases must) signal disapproval and act accordingly. However, boycotting a ceremony because the Internatioanl Paralympic Committee does not discriminate between athletes is objectionable. It expands the attack surface for democracy, by politicizing sport and leveraging guilt by association (based on nationality, rather than conduct).

Punishing individual athletes based on their nationality is neither effective nor, more importantly, enlightened. The EU Commissionner should not try to enforce this. Rather than fostering peace, it weaponizes disagreement and invites further polarization.
